Choosing the Right Country Club in a New City: Why Slowing Down Might Be the Smartest Move You Make

Choosing the Right Country Club in a New City: Why Slowing Down Might Be the Smartest Move You Make

When you move to a new city, there’s so much to figure out. Schools, grocery stores, neighborhoods—and if you love to golf, one of the first questions becomes: “Which club should I join?”

At first glance, joining a country club seems like the perfect way to plug into the community.
You’ll meet people, play golf, enjoy social events… it checks all the boxes, right?

But here’s the quiet truth:
Just because it’s a great club doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you.

Country Clubs Have Personalities—And You’ll Feel It

It’s easy to get swept up in suggestions from friends or strangers on Facebook.
You’ll hear things like:

“Everyone’s so nice there.”
“The food is amazing.”
“My friend’s cousin loves it—you’ll fit right in!”

But country clubs are like people: they each have their own unique personality.
Some are lively and social, others are more reserved.
Some are family-focused with lots of kids’ programming. Others are focused on serious golf and tradition.
Some clubs are warm and welcoming from day one. Others take a little time (and maybe a few rounds) before they open up.

You’re Not Just Choosing a Club—You’re Choosing How You Spend Your Time

This decision isn’t just about access to golf or tennis.
It’s about where you’ll unwind after a long day.
Where you’ll meet your people.
Where your kids might grow up swimming or where your partner might join you for dinner.

And if it doesn’t feel right?
No matter how beautiful the grounds are or how many others recommend it—you’ll feel it.
And you won’t want to stay.

So Here’s My Advice: Take Your Time

If you’re new in town, don’t rush to join a club just to check it off the list.
Play a few public rounds first.
Ask about guest days or trial months.
Tour the facilities.
Have lunch on the patio.
Notice the people.
Talk to a few members (ideally not just the ones they pair you with).
And most of all—listen to your gut.

Because when you find the right club, you’ll know.
The energy fits. The people feel easy. The culture supports how you want to live.

And when that happens? You won’t just be joining a club.
You’ll be finding your place.
